Who requires Importer – Exporter Code?

Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is mandatory for anyone who is Importing in India or exporting out of India. IEC Code is a unique 10 digit code that would be issued Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce or Government of India. No person would be allowed to import or export anything without IEC Code Number.

Documents required

  • PAN Card copy of the business entity
  • Registration Certificate (in case of Registered Partnership Firm)
  • PAN Copy of anyone Directors/ Partners/ Proprietor
  • Proof of address for business premises (Rental agreement if rented, Property tax paid challan + NOC if owned by partner)
  • Company incorporation certificate (in case of Pvt Ltd/ OPC/ LLP)
  • Partnership Deed (in case of Unregistered Partnership Firm)
  • Photo of all the Directors/ Partners/ Proprietor
  • Electricity bill copy for the address of the business premises.
  • Canceled check or Banker’s Certificate (Format to be shared)

Any entity or individual involved in international trade are required to get Import Export Code, except for the following categories of importers or exporters:

  • Importers covered by clause 3(1) [except sub-clauses(e) and (l)]
  • Exporters covered by clause 3(2) [except sub-clauses (i) and (k)] of Foreign Trade (Exemption from application of Rules in certain cases) Order, 1993.
  • Ministries/ Departments of Central or State Government.
  • Persons importing or exporting goods for personal use not connected with trade or manufacture or agriculture.
  • Persons importing/exporting goods from/ to Nepal, Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas and China (through Gunji, Namgaya Shipkila, and Nathula ports), provided CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed Indian Rs.25,000. In the case of Nathula port, the applicable value ceiling will be Rs.100,000.

IEC is entity-specific and is independent of units, offices, factories, divisions or products. One IEC is applicable to all such units the entity owns.

Yes, you can surrender such Import Export Code number to the concerned authorities. The issuing authority shall cancel such IEC and transmit electronically to DGFT and customs authorities.
